English Language Program

ELP Course Description

This program prepares students for a university education. The aim of the program is not only to bring students up to the language level for university admission, but to bridge the gap between studying at high school and at university by developing the university study skills that will help students become effective learners. Each course is an intensive course of 16 class hours a week. Students are also expected to develop their English skills outside the class with regular homework which encompasses a range of learning activities. Students are interviewed and take a reading comprehension and writing test to help gauge their level so they can be allocated to the English course that will best help them.

  • ELP 1– English for Academic Purposes – This level is for students who have IELTS 4 or TOEFL 450 or less. This course is suitable for students who need to improve their general English and simultaneously work on their academic skills. In this course, students are expected to participate in a range of activities especially designed to improve their language learning, boost their confidence as English speakers, and enable them to express themselves in clear written and spoken English.
  • ELP 2– English for Academic Purposes – This level is for students who have IELTS 4.5 or TOEFL 475 only. By the end of this course, students should not only have reached the required language level (TOEFL 500 or IELTS 5.0), but they should also have learnt many skills that they need to be successful at university. The course focuses on the kind of academic language that they will need to be effective students at the beginning of their academic career.

Student learning outcomes by skill

Skill 1: READING – The primary purpose of Reading Instruction of ELP II is to provide the student with a battery of interrelated skills that will enable him/her to engage effectively with academic texts common of entry-level undergraduate coursework.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Read authentic extended texts independently at advanced English level for Academic purposes
  • Summarize events.
  • Make inferences about characters and relationships within and beyond the context of the reading.
  • Understand general academic and subject specific vocabulary in context.
  • Describe characters and their roles.
  • Relate main ideas/events of the text to own life experience.
  • Apply reading strategies in order to synthesize, record and report the main ideas from an undergraduate academic text. 

Skill 2: WRITING – The primary goal of Writing Instruction of ELP II is to provide students with the entry level academic writing ability necessary for success in introductory undergraduate courses.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Compose formally structured paragraphs and essays with topic sentences, main ideas, supporting details, and concluding sentences through a process of drafting and revision.
  • Use the language of description, process, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, classification and definition jointly.
  • Develop supporting ideas with examples, explanations, facts, or analysis.
  • Express ideas in multi-paragraph academic essay assignments with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph.
  • Summarize, paraphrase and synthesize a variety of credible Internet and library sources into multi-paragraph essay.
  • Evaluate and edit writing for content, organization, grammar and academic vocabulary.

Skill 3: LISTENING – The main purpose of Listening Instruction of ELP II is to improve the student’s ability to effectively comprehend and assess oral English Language activities typical of the entry-level undergraduate academic environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Listen for and recall specific information while practicing note-taking strategies.
  • Listen to monologues and dialogues, mini lectures and: identify main topics, specific information, meaning through context.
  • Recognize, recall, analyze and utilize general academic and subject specific vocabulary.
  • Analyze a speaker’s purpose and tone.
  • Distinguish between fact and opinion in lectures and interviews.
  • Formulate opinions in response to oral text.

Skill 4: SPEAKING – The primary purpose of the Reading Instruction of ELP II is to assist the student in learning to communicate effectively and successfully in public speaking and social contexts common to the academic environment at the introductory undergraduate level.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Learn principles of narration and exposition
  • Organize 15 minute presentations.
  • Maintain overall comprehensibility during presentations.
  • Assemble and organize relevant information for presentations at high-intermediate to advanced level.
  • Present information derived from written or visual texts.
  • Participate in conversations/discussions and reach group decisions.
  • Use fixed phrases, general academic and subject specific vocabulary to support opinions.
