Women in Computing: Dr. Khouloud Salameh, The School of Engineering

In showcasing design projects, AURAK’s female Computer Science and Engineering students unveiled an innovative mix of truly ground-breaking ideas aimed at benefiting society.  From a diet recommendation system to a parking app, these young women have demonstrated their potential to become true leaders of technology.

Driver Drowsiness Detection System (Supervisor: Dr. Ali Alnoman)

Students – Aneesa Al Redhaei, Safia Mohamed & Yaman Albadawi. Drowsiness is a leading cause of accidents and affects road safety significantly. Many fatal accidents can be prevented if drowsy drivers are warned to take a break at the right time. This project developed a real-time, visual-based drowsiness detection system that recognizes drowsiness by monitoring an eye feature called the eye aspect ratio. If the system detects eye movements that indicate drowsiness, an alarm is sounded to alert the driver. The system knows which eye movements are indicative of drowsiness because, using facial images from a public dataset, the eye aspect ratio was extracted, analyzed, and recorded and machine learning classifiers were used to raise the accuracy of detection.

AURAK Digital Assistant (Supervisor: Dr. Khouloud Salameh)

Students – Sara Shaikhi, Shouk Shehata, Zheng Dong & Hadi Elamin. This project built a mobile app that automates university tasks saving time and resources. The app is compatible with different platforms, and contains several advanced functionalities to benefit students and faculty. The main functionality will assist students by automatically generating optimal class schedules based on course selection and timing preference. It also has the potential to link to transport and other key services.

Diet Recommendation System (Supervisor: Dr. Ali Alnoman)

Students – Hanin Alshrebaty, Safa Abdalla & Shahad Alshehhi. Poor dietary choices are a key cause of a large number of illnesses and health issues. To address this, a diet recommendation system has been developed which helps users improve their diet by providing information on healthier choices. In brief, the system assigns a score for the chosen meal and provides information on alternatives that will improve the user’s diet.

Parking Finder Application (Supervisor: Dr. Arfan Ghani)

Students – Naema Alnuaimi, Maryam Alteneiji, Saeed Khamis, Hamad Alduhoori. Parking Finder is a free, cross-platform application. Installed on mobile phones, the goal of the application is to reduce stress and potential for accidents while looking for a space in a crowded car park. The benefits include improved safety, saving time and avoiding expensive parking tickets.
