Undergraduate Research (ENGR 399)

Undergraduate Research (ENGR 399)

OVERVIEW

Engineering students are strongly encouraged to pursue undergraduate research opportunities before completing their degree. Undergraduate research opportunities could be available during any semester during the academic year, including summer. Students earn credit for research during the academic year by registering the course of ENGR 399; undergraduate research project, for three credits. The course is considered as a technical elective for different engineering undergraduate programs.  The AURAK Undergraduate Research Program (EURP) is an excellent resource for learning about undergraduate research opportunities.

Benefits of Research

Participating in undergraduate research can provide opportunities for undergraduate students to:

  • Work one-on-one with faculty;
  • Contribute to the creation of new knowledge;
  • Sharpen student’s critical and analytical thinking skills;
  • Complement and extend classroom learning;
  • Enhance confidence in student’s abilities;
  • Prepare for graduate-level study; and,
  • Explore students’ interests and clarify their career goals.

Some of the greatest benefits of being involved in research are the insight it gives students on:

  • How to learn;
  • How new knowledge is created; and,
  • What you can accomplish when actively engaging your own research questions.

About Mentoring

Mentoring relationships benefit both undergraduates and faculty, develop over time, and enable:

  • Commitment to scholarly development; and,
  • Engagement in collaborative inquiry.

Mentoring relationships also encourage:

  • Positive environments, which encourage questions and foster curiosity;
  • Consideration of new or alternative approaches;
  • Constructive, reciprocal feedback;

And often provide:

  • Guidance for the undergraduate in making important research or related career decisions;
  • Oversight of the undergraduate’s research methods and practices;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of available resources and funding;
  • Support in sharing and publicly pressing research;

All of which supports the enjoyment of active participation in research!

EURP Advising

The Undergraduate Research Program is available for advising on all aspects of undergraduate research, including:

  • Planning for a research experience
  • Finding a position
  • Getting academic credit
  • Summer research programs
  • Finding research funding
  • Presenting or publishing your research

The School of Engineering has assigned Dr. Maen Takruri; an assistant professor in the ECE department, as the coordinator of the EURP.

Research Fund within AURAK

Upon the recommendation of the undergraduate research advisor and EURP coordinator, the student research proposal may get reasonable funds from AURAK.

Find Research beyond AURAK

Undergraduate research beyond AURAK can be a great learning experience in a new and exciting environment. Opportunities are made available to students through the Engineering Undergraduate Research Program. Information about each program, as well as how to apply, can be found on the school of engineering webpage.

About the EURP Conference Travel Award

Undergraduate students can publicly communicate their own research and share their ideas with others are important parts of engaging in academic research. We encourage all students who have a paper, poster, or scholarly creative work that has been accepted for professional presentation to apply for an award. Applications will be evaluated by a specialized committee that is lead by the coordinator of EURP, AURAK will support one undergraduate student to participate in regional or international conference to present his/ her research.

The Engineering Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Award:

  • Enables undergraduate students to extend their research experience by contributing to important discussions of current research at professional conferences; and,
  • Provides funding toward conference travel expenses and registration fees.

Getting Academic Credit

The best way to obtain credit for student’s involvement in research is to register in the Undergraduate Research Project ENGR 399 for 3 credits.

Present at a Conference

There are many discipline-specific professional meetings and conferences that invite students to share their work as posters or short presentations. If a student is ready to share his/ her work at a professional meeting or conference, he/ she are advised to talk to the EURP coordinator in order to consider funding his/ her experience with an Engineering Undergraduate Research Conference Travel Award.  Additional conferences are listed as they are made available to the Undergraduate Research Program:

Publish Undergraduate Research

Research results contribute to knowledge in a field when they are shared with other practitioners in the discipline.

If a student has made a significant contribution to an area of research, he/ she may wish to collaborate on a peer-reviewed publication for a professional journal. Also, students are encouraged to talk to the EURP coordinator, if they have questions about getting published.

Of note, there are multiple journals at that publish undergraduate work. These journals include, but not limited to:
