The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) has achieved a major success by winning the award for the best sustainability project in the competition organized by Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and Borouge, during the annual ceremony of the Sustainable Universities Initiative that was organized last week.
During the ceremony, which was held virtually, the winning universities for the best sustainable work projects were announced, and AURAK won the Best Sustainability Project.
The idea of this project, which was completed by university students under the supervision of Dr. Khouloud Salameh, Associate Professor of Computer Science at AURAK’s school of Engineering, revolves around an incentive-based smart recycling bin, which is a smart recycling solution aiming to change how people approach recycling and waste management on a fundamental level.
This initiative, which includes about 22 colleges and universities, aims to strengthen leadership capabilities among the youth in the United Arab Emirates and to address environmental sustainability issues. It also aims to provide a platform that would enhance communication between youth and raise a spirit of challenge among them. Such a spirit of challenge will contribute to reducing the environmental impact and encourage them to work constructively towards sustainable solutions both at the present time and in the long term.
