AURAK Hands Out Awards in Creative Writing Competition

February 27, 2020,

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) announced the winners of the Creative Writing Competition 2019-2020.

It was the fourth time that the event has taken place, following its first appearance in 2016. The competition consists of writing ‘flash fiction’ pieces of 400-600 words. The judges assessed the short stories anonymously from the 21 participants that took part this year.

The even began with a speech by local writer and critic, Dr. Abeer Alhosani, who is also a member of the Emirates Writers Union and the UAE Development Association. She has written more than 20 books and publications including ‘You Are the Author’ and stories for children.

In a question and answer session after her speech, Dr. Abeer answered queries about various aspects of writing including choosing a publisher, the payment of royalties, the increase in people reading on mobile devices rather than conventional books, and creativity.

Fatima Hamad Shumayyel Al Khateri (Architecture) won the competition with a piece called ‘The Fourth Wall’. Shoug Tareq Al Sharhan (Business Administration) was the runner-up with ‘The Sharp Ambiance’ and third place was taken by Noora Alali (International Business Administration) with ‘My Own Creations’.

Esraa Zakaria Omran Kamaleldin (Architecture) with ‘Do Not Open’, Almountassir Bellah Balhasan (Computer Engineering) with ‘The Story of Life’ and Mariam Fouad Ahmed Mohamed (Civil and Infrastructure Engineering) with ‘The Satisfied Ones are the Successful Ones’ were all given certificates of recognition.

A giant cake was cut and shared at the end to mark the Creative Writing Competition.
