AURAK hosts Presidential Awards for 2017-2018
June 13, 2018,
The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) President, Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, bestowed prestigious awards to honor faculty and staff members for demonstrating exceptional devotion throughout the 2017-2018 academic year.
AURAK Ambassador, Sana Sy, commenced the ceremony by welcoming guests and introducing Prof. Hassan, who thanked and congratulated the AURAK Faculty and Staff for their hard work and contributions throughout the year. He then introduced the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Success and Provost, Prof. Stephen Wilhite, as the announcer for the evening’s ceremony. Prof. Stephen started the presentation of awards with a joke that while the position of Provost comes with the contractual statement “other duties assigned” that obligates him to perform duties that typically makes one cringe, presenting these awards, however, was not one of those duties, but a privilege he felt honored in being the individual chosen to bestow.
The Presidential Awards for Faculty included Excellence in Teaching, which was awarded to Dr. Mohammed Awad; Outstanding Researcher, which was awarded to Dr. Ali Maalaoui; and President’s Leadership in Service, which was awarded to Dr. Philipp Dorstewitz.
The Presidential Awards for Staff included Distinguished General Services Staff, which was awarded to Mr. Moosa Kutty; Distinguished Professional Staff, which was awarded to Ms. Wennie Bandico; and Distinguished Manager/Director, which was awarded to Mr. Mohamed Sharul.
Each award winner was presented with a certificate on stage by Prof. Hassan and the opportunity to have their photo taken with the president. Ms. Sana concluded the ceremony by thanking the winners on their awards, invoking another round of applause for the winners from the audience, and asking for a group photo of all of the award winners.
Dr. Philipp Dorstewitz, recipient of the President’s Leadership in Service Award had this to say about receiving his award, “At AURAK most faculty members are steeped in and committed to service activities. All of us serve on important committees and partake in DASPA along with other quality assurance efforts; our bid for SACSCOC accreditation is a truly shared endeavor. Moreover, I see countless initiatives across campus where colleagues use their talents and creativity to make AURAK a vibrant place for the benefits of our students and the wider community in Ras Al Khaimah. It is, therefore, a great honor to be singled out by an award for service and leadership at this institution. An honor, which I am very aware, many of my colleagues deserve and will hopefully see in the future.”
Prof. Hassan was overjoyed with awarding outstanding excellence. The AURAK faculty and staff members dedicate countless hours developing lessons, building student relationships, constructing projects, forging agreements, researching their disciplines, serving on committees, and manipulating paperwork, all with the intentions of enhancing the university both inside and outside the classrooms and solidifying the opportunity for students to acquire a rock solid education. His only regret was not being able to bestow an award to every member of the AURAK family.
