May 2, 2018,

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS) hosted their first annual Humanities and Social Sciences Day to promote the department to the rest of the university with various activities.

AURAK faculty, staff, and students participated in different activities such as a photography exhibition, messages of wisdom from the Qur’an, a debate on climate change, a panel discussion on philosophy, technology, and ethics, a masquerade ball, and a speech competition.

The purpose of this event was to raise awareness about the importance of the department’s courses and how the topics of H&SS are important in education.

“The aim of this event is to offer awareness to the AURAK community at large about the importance of the topics and courses of Humanities and Social Sciences to higher education and interdisciplinary studies.  The activities during the H&SS Day reflect the importance of these courses in enhancing the ability of the students to think critically and creatively, to gain new insights, and learn about the importance of moral values.  This event also highlights the fact that although the H&SS fields are different from scientific fields, they are equally important to the understanding of the world and the very meaning of life,” Dr.Mashhad, Chair of Humanities and Social Sciences Dept.”

The event helped enlighten students in understanding how different educational departments transcend and affect each other, “The event was useful for me; I have learned how the Humanities and Social Science courses are related to my major (Accounting) and to all other majors as well,” Fadeelah Khamis Al Hashmi.

This event illustrates how imperative it is to AURAK President, Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, for AURAK students to have a sturdy, well-rounded education, not only in their specific majors, but also in other educational fields.
