AURAK Engineers: Formula for Success

May, 20, 2019,

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah’s (AURAK) School of Engineering organized AURAK Engineering Design and Research Day to encourage innovation and ingenuity among students in a competitive atmosphere.

“Scientists and Engineers are two faces of one coin,” remarked the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Mousa Mohsen, in his welcome speech, initiating the AURAK Engineering Design and Research Day. Professor Mousa explained that scientists and engineers work hand-in-hand. Scientists explore and develop scientific theories and breakthroughs while engineers apply those theories and breakthroughs to practical uses to benefit society. This enterprise was meant to give students first-hand experience in designing projects using scientific, classroom theory to solve issues within a competitive environment.

After the welcoming speech, students stood in front of the posters they created concerning their project. Each gave presentations on their project for all those who visited their work, detailing the problem their project targeted and explaining how their project would solve that problem. In addition to displaying their proud accomplishments to their peers, faculty, and other observers, they also revealed their abilities to the many judges of the projects, who evaluated the posters and presentations made by the students. At the end of the day, the event closed with an awards ceremony in which winners of various Engineering programs were awarded prizes for the most innovative, efficient, and creative ideas.

“Competition is a catalyst for ingenuity and innovation, and is essential for cultivating the advancement of society,” remarked AURAK President, Professor Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim. “Initiatives such as AURAK’s Engineering Design and Research Day foster wonderful competitive spaces for students to use the cutting-edge facilities provided by the University to authentically explore the scientific theories learned in the classroom and apply them in creating practical uses that will advance society, helping the students to better understand the theories and giving them true authority over them.”
