Designing and building a satellite, even one the size of a CubeSat, is a very complex task, combining multiple engineering disciplines and skills. The project provides Emirati students with a hands-on design, build, test, and operations experience working on a real satellite project. Its interdisciplinary nature exposes the students to the broader issues related to systems engineering, and provides them with invaluable experience.

The project has two general objectives as outlined below:

Educational Objective: Relatively low-cost hands-on space training for Emiratis, and hence offering the UAE space industry qualified well-trained graduates who can become effective players in the UAE space program. A simple color camera will be one of the payloads and will be used as an educational tool to demonstrate the process of remote sensing data acquisition.

 Scientific Objective: Exploration of the performance of Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) (1200-2500 nm) sensor for the estimation of Methane, and Carbon Dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

The idea is to build a drone which can communicate with the people in remote and tough terrains who might need help or supplies delivered to them. The drone will communicate via a mobile application used to describe the type of emergency then the retrieved data is sent to an operation system which then attaches the suitable pack. This pack will be delivered via the drone to app user who requested help. In order to provide them with the suitable supplies, which can help them survive, until the proper action is taken.

Exploiting the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has become a trend that increasingly covers various fields. NFC relies basically on sending information over radio waves between two compatible devices. An NFC device can take a form of active or passive, while an active NFC device, such as a smartphone, is capable of sending/receiving data along with processing these data, a passive NFC device (such as NFC tags) is capable only of sending data to other active devices without any processing capability.

By far, the NFC technology has been common and rapid growing in the contactless payment systems which rely on NFC enabled smartphones to replace traditional payment cards by storing the cards’ information and transmitting the required data to complete payment procedures.

In this project, the focus will be on utilizing NFC technology and its security, ease of use, versatility, and fast connectivity features to implement a room locker that can be managed using an NFC enabled smartphone. Another focus of this project will be the integration of Wi-Fi technology that allows monitoring of the locker status and other accessibility parameters through an up-to-date database.

During the development of the project, the main purpose will be to explore how embedding such a technology can be feasible to be used in a simple house locker or in a large room management system such as a hotel, and how it would lead to an easier, more doable, and reliable experience for the user.

This project proposes to solve this problem using Internet of Things and Open Source platforms to one of the most common problem faced by the residents of the UAE. We are looking for ways to reduce the lead time in finding a parking spot during week days office rush hours or weekend days shopping sprees.
