Dr. Hussain Attia, The School of Engineering

Dr. Attia is AURAK’s 2020 Outstanding Researcher, here’s what makes Dr. Attia such a valuable asset to academic inquiry and about his groundbreaking work on mitigating the dead-time effects on harmonics spectrum of inverter waveform by the confined band VSFPWM technique.

AURAK’s Dr. Hussain Attia has a Ph.D. in Power Electronics and over 22 years of research and teaching experience in the field of Electrical, Electronics and Power Electronics. Dr. Attia joined AURAK in February 2010 as an instructor in the School of Engineering. During the last eleven years, he secured his Ph.D. and continually strives to be one of AURAK’s truly exemplary researchers and teachers.

The AURAK Outstanding Researcher Award was presented to Dr. Attia for exhibiting distinction in research and scholarship in 2020.  Dr. Attia’s research focus has been on improving the performance of power electronics systems and renewable energy generation.  He has an impressive publishing record, with 27 journal publications in his 10 years at AURAK and the Scopus database details his 44 published documents.

During his time at AURAK, Dr. Attia completed his Ph.D. studies in the field of power electronics.  He proposed and investigated a new, efficient, Confined Band Variable Switching Frequency Pulse Width Modulation (CB-VSFPWM) technique for inverter systems.

Dr. Attia is serving as a co-PI on an externally funded ICT grant project. These accomplishments are indicative of an exemplary work ethic and a determination to excel that demonstrate Dr. Attia’s desire to contribute to the expansion of knowledge in his field.

During his time in the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering at AURAK he has been involved in projects including: improving the performance of the photovoltaic panel through a hybrid process; combining an intelligent MPPT algorithm with decreasing the panel temperature by water cooling; energy saving in LED street lights through an adaptive dimming power electronic system; the development of a  hybrid water desalination system based on solar energy in Ras Al Khaimah; and improving the performance of an agricultural pump system based on the dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) remote controlling technique.

Dr. Attia has enjoyed great conference success at international conferences in Canada, Malaysia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

An active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in terms of publishing research and journal papers and presenting at IEEE conferences, Dr. Attia also reviews papers for high ranking journals such as IEEE Transaction on Power Electronics, IET-Power Electronics, IET-Electric Power Applications, and International IEEE Conferences.

Dr. Attia’s current research is mainly focusing on improving the performance of AC/DC drives, solar PV inverter/converter, harmonics elimination/reduction techniques, AC/DC variable power supply, and Maximum Power Point Tracking MPPT algorithms.
