AURAK Winning Awards – Best Sustainability Action Project,
Dr. Khouloud Salameh, The School of Engineering
AURAK students won the Best Sustainability Action Project in a competition organized by the prestigious Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi and Borouge.  Â
A dynamic group of AURAK senior students, Abdulfatah Bahbouh, Khaldoon Alhusari, Sami Azzam and Mohamed Emam, under the supervision of Dr. Khouloud Salameh, were delighted to be presented with the Best Sustainability Action Project Award at an online ceremony on the 29th Nov. 2020.Â
The project sprang out of the group’s interest in exploring ways to encourage people to recycle. They came up with the incentive-based, smart recycling bin (ISRB). The ISRB is a smart recycling solution aimed at changing habits, as well as attitudes to recycling and waste management.  The ISRB rewards recyclers with points that can be redeemed for cash or shopping vouchers. It works by using the latest technology to detect when a user throws their waste in the plastic bin. Immediately after, the central computing unit in the ISRB displays a QR code that is scanned and points are credited to the recycler in their ISRB account via the app. The students, AURAK and the Environment Agency are incredibly excited about this idea and believe it could well be a breakthrough in waste recycling as it will make recycling fun and rewarding.Â
