AURAK has a number of research centers dedicated to advancing knowledge in key areas but also supporting the teaching and learning within the University. In this article we look at the ICT Research and Innovation Centre or ICONET for short. The centre is headed by Dr. Maen Takruri and was established by AURAK’s School of Engineering with support from the Telecommunication and Regulatory Authority’s ICT Fund. ICONET was launched to advance excellence in education and innovation.
ICONET fosters excellence in the development of ICT and its application to problems of national interest in science and engineering. ICONET is designed to incorporate a range of activities that are unified under the umbrella of ICT. These activities include research and development, business incubation, educational programming for schools, and training, among others.
ICONET is currently involved in research in the areas of IoT, Smart Cities, AI, Virtual Reality, Cube-Satellites, Polarization Sensing, and Image and Signal Processing. The Center has had many successes, which include:
- Building and launching of MeznSat a 3-U CubeSat.
- Establishing a Space Lab.
- Establishing the Ground Station to track the satellite.
- Training 30 students to become space engineers.
- Starting an ICT Academy in collaboration with Huawei.
- Securing ICT grants to equip the School of Engineering ICT related Labs.
- Supporting School of Engineering and AURAK community engagement initiatives by participating in national events and competitions.
In addition to this, ICONET has established an Innovation Lab for students so that they can experience an innovative environment with state-of-the-art technologies such as Virtual Reality, IoT, Robotics, and mobile development, in a fun vibrant and stimulating environment. The Innovation Lab is also open for RAK school students so that they are exposed to a practical approach to Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Electronics and Communications Engineering.
The Innovation Lab also serves as a gateway to AURAK’s expanding campus and enables the university to be a cross-disciplinary, research and innovation focused learning and development community.

Research Connection: The Office of Research and Community Service
We manage all aspects of research and community service, such as the appointment of distinguished fellows and scholars, scholarly publication processes, sponsored programs, community service programs, RAK Research and Innovation Center (RAKRIC), and the Center for Executive and Professional Education. ORCS enhances and assists in research and scholarly activities of AURAK faculty through research mentoring and professional development and through promoting collaborations with faculty inside and outside the University. Our office also ensures the engagement of AURAK faculty, staff, and students with the community through services that address community needs.
