Disability Services

Students with disabilities may request additional support through the Department of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services. The University endeavors to support students with special needs where resources are available. Requests are confidential and will be handled with complete discretion. Students with verified disabilities will be provided reasonable accommodations that provide equal access to educational facilities, programs, services, and activities. Students may make requests for services by contacting the Department of Counseling, Testing, and Disability Services located in Building B.

The staff in The Department of Academic Recovery Programs and Counseling will seek to verify the disability and determine the accommodations needed to provide equal access to facilities, programs, activities, and educational opportunities at AURAK.


Types of Disabilities

The following is a list of Disabilities Recognized under UAE Federal Law No. (29) of 2006:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder / Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Auditory Impairment /Hearing Loss or Deafness
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders / Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Emotional / Psychiatric Disabilities
  • Physical Disability
  • Other Health Impairment / Medical Disabilities
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Traumatic Brain Injury / Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment


Types of Accommodations

Accommodations are determined based on the type of disability and the specific needs of the student.  The following is a list of accommodations that are typically provided to AURAK students:

  • Preferential seating (does not necessarily mean in front of the teacher’s desk)
  • Note-taking assistance which may include assistance from classmates, copies of classmates and/or instructor’s notes and/or overheads
  • Extended time for tests, quizzes, and exams
  • Exams administered in a quiet, non-distracting environment
  • Tape recording of lectures
  • Extended time for in class assignments
  • Concise oral instructions and/or clarification of instructions
  • Syllabus provided before the start of the semester
Temporary Disabilities

AURAK is committed to supporting the academic success of all students.  On occasion, events occur which necessarily inhibit a student’s ability to perform academically.  Students who suffer a temporary injury or health related occurrence and require assistance are encouraged to contact the ARPC office immediately.  The ARPC staff will collaborate and coordinate reasonable support efforts for students with functional impairment.  These may include broken bones, injuries requiring surgery and other acute illnesses.  Appropriate temporary accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis and may include such accommodations as:  assistance with obtaining class notes; and assistance with taking exams and/or quizzes.
