Implementation Strategies
Institutional Commitment
As part of its five-year strategic plan, AURAK has committed to increase its reliance on renewable energy by twenty-five percent.
Waste Management and Recycling
AURAK is committed to complying with the UAE Federal and local laws relating to Protection and Development of the Environment. AURAK is currently working with the Ras Al Khaimah Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA) and Waste Management Agency to identify a range of strategies.
AURAK ensures that it uses compliant, environmentally sound and financially controlled practices by adopting the principles of the ‘best practicable environmental option’ in its management of waste. The University applies a proper procedure to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover waste products. In collaboration with RAK Waste Management, AURAK ensures that waste to be collected is segregated into three categories – paper, plastic and glass – to facilitate easy recycling. AURAK also collaborates with RAK Waste Management to ensure the safe disposal of waste used in its laboratories.
Retrofit Project
AURAK, RAK Municipality and the Investment Development Office (IDO) are working on a project to retrofit all campus buildings. This initiative is directly tied to AURAK’s long-term strategic goals to plan, construct, renovate and maintain state of the art facilities. The IDO sponsors this project and the first phase – to assess possible energy savings at AURAK – has already been completed.
Green Building Strategy
AURAK complies with the RAK Municipality green building regulations entitled the ‘Barjeel’. These regulations are a key pillar in the RAK Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Strategy 2040, that targets 30 percent energy savings, 20 percent water savings, and a 20 percent share from renewable energy by 2040. The Barjeel regulations have already been implemented in three new buildings on campus and work is in progress to incorporate these in the new library building. All new AURAK buildings are being designed and their construction planned in compliance with the Barjeel.
