Engr. Abeer Abu-Raed

Abeer Abu Raed is an architect, researcher, and educator with over +18 years ofinternational experience in architectural design, heritage preservation and documentation, urban regeneration, and sustainable development across Europe, Gulf and MENA region.

Her research and professional work focus on modern heritage preservation, semantic HBIM, digital twins, photogrammetry, and the integration of advanced technologies including AI and VR into heritage management and architectural education.

As an Assistant Professor at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, Abeer Abu Raed has led and contributed to interdisciplinary research projects, innovation initiatives, startup and capacity- building workshops across Europe and the Arab world. Notable collaborations include TU Delft, University of Twente, with a focus on digital twin platforms, cultural Heritage and sustainability.

She has designed and taught a wide range of courses, including architectural design studios, parametric design, digital fabrication, and advanced BIM, Conservation of historic environment alongside supervising master thesis in sustainability. Her work has been supported by competitive grants and recognized by international awards in cultural innovation and renewable integration.

Her research is published in indexed journals and presented at international conferences such as CHNT, LDE Heritage, and Eco-Architecture. Abeer Abu Raed is actively engaged in the digital preservation of modernist architecture in the Gulf, with case studies including Building in Dubai, Sharjah and historic neighborhoods in Ras Al Khaimah.

Abeer is a member of several professional bodies, such as, CIPA, UAE Society of Engineers, Jordan Engineers Association, and the American Institute of Architecture AIAS. She serves as a jury member for the Tamayouz Excellence Award, supporting the evaluation of innovative architectural and urban design projects at the international level.

As part of her engagement with modern heritage preservation, she actively contributes to Docomomo International’s mission to document and conserve the architecture of the Modern Movement. She was invited to share one of her case studies on modern heritage in Dubai as part of Docomomo’s interactive 3D platform. This contribution highlights the use of new innovative technologies of Gaussian Splatting, photogrammetry to advance digital documentation practices and promote wider recognition of Gulf modernism within the global discourse on 20th-century heritage.
