In line with the vision and directions of Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, President of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, the Department of Biotechnology encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities relevant to their discipline of study and emerging biomedical technologies. Besides instructive trainings in state of the art biotechnology laboratories at the AURAK campus, student’s interaction with their peers and professionals at conferences and meetings have been really helpful to broaden their vision and understanding about the impact of biotechnology in our lives.

The Chair of the Department of Biotechnology, Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, along with Dr. Maxime Merheb, Assistant Professor of Biotechnology, led a group of students to participate in the ARABLAB 2015, the largest technology show serving the Middle East & Africa held in Dubai International Exhibition Center. Participation in this event provided students with the opportunity to learn about biotechnology relevant laboratory instrumentation and new equipment from all the leading manufacturers of the world. Students took a very keen interest in various emerging technologies and products displayed in this exhibition. The Department also encouraged students to document their experiences of this scientific event.

Recently, Biotechnology Department students participated in the first ever distinguished exhibition, Dubai Nobel Museum’s Travelling Exhibition, “The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World” brought to Dubai by The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation (MBRF), under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Several Nobel Prizes in the past have been conferred on scientists for their biotechnology inventions benefitting the humanity. AURAK Biotechnology students recognized both these activities highly beneficial and complementary to biotechnology education they are pursuing at AURAK.
