On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) organized a visit to Obaidullah Hospital – a specialist medical facility for the elderly – in Ras Al Khaimah. The visit reflects the university’s eagerness to educate students on the importance of giving back to previous generations, who, as they mature, experience several physical and psychological changes. Furthermore, with this visit, the university recognizes the significant role that these previous generations have played in the development this country.
The visit was carried out by a delegation of students, faculty members and staff. They were given a tour of the hospital’s wards, providing company to the patients, chatting to them and lifting their spirits. The elderly were presented with gifts and flowers, demonstrating the university’s appreciation and respect towards them. This worthwhile initiative helped to create a family atmosphere, as the social interaction provided the patients with some much needed relief, evident from the smiles on their faces.
Professor Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, the president of AURAK, praised the level of care which the UAE Government provides for the elderly, ensuring they enjoy the best conditions and have access to social, psychological and medical support. Given AURAK’s emphasis on social responsibility, he also noted that the university is planning to expand its participation in the local community during the 2015/2016 academic year, with the aim of providing a platform for AURAK students to positively contribute to society.
To conclude the visit, the university delegation thanked Obaidullah hospital’s administration and its employees, on behalf of Professor Al Alkim, for their efforts to serve and care for the elderly.
The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is an independent co-education institution of Higher Education that provides an integrated American-style, undergraduate and graduate education with a strong focus on local indigenous culture.
