Dr. Uday Kumar
Department Chair Associate Professor - Chemical Engineering / Sustainability Officer
Dr. Tirumala Uday Kumar Nutakki is Department Chair and Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Sustainability Officer at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK). He has more than 18 years of applied research and engineering experience spanning academia, research centers, and industry, with expertise in sustainable water, energy, and environmental systems. His research focuses on membrane processes for desalination and industrial wastewater treatment, renewable-energy-integrated water and energy systems, waste-to-resource and bioenergy pathways, green and biohydrogen, carbon capture and resource recovery, industrial symbiosis and circular economy, advanced materials for energy storage, and passive building-energy-efficiency solutions.
Dr. Kumar has extensive experience in the design, development, commissioning, and operation of bench-, pilot-, and industrial-scale research and testing platforms. His work has included solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, membrane distillation, zero-liquid-discharge and brine valorization concepts, waste-to-energy and waste-to-fuels systems, photobioreactors, green hydrogen systems, supercapacitor materials, water and materials testing, and environmental performance evaluation.
He has authored more than 80 journal papers, conference papers, book chapters, and policy/research outputs, and has secured or contributed to industrial, collaborative, and competitive research funding and infrastructure development with a cumulative value of approximately US$1 million. He has supervised undergraduate, master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral research activities and has established collaborations with academic, government, and industrial partners. His contributions have been recognized by AURAK's President's Award for Outstanding Researcher of the Year (2024), the AURAK Long Service Award (2015–2025), and recognition as a finalist/runner-up for the EmiratesGBC MENA Green Research Project of the Year (2020).
Before joining the AURAK faculty, Dr. Kumar held research and engineering roles at the RAK Research and Innovation Center (formerly CSEM-UAE), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Doshion Veolia Water Solutions. He previously served as Director (Responsible) and Laboratory Manager/Coordinator (R&D) at RAKRIC, where he supported interdisciplinary applied research, industrial collaboration, testing services, and research infrastructure development.
