AURAK Explores Tripoli Architecture

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) School of Graduate Studies and Research featured  the research of the Assistant Professor of Architecture Design, Urban Planning, and Urban Design, Dr. Fathia Elmenghawi, entitled “Transformation in Urban Design of Tripoli’s Center, Libya: Colonial and Post-Colonial Monuments in a Central Public Square” in their Faculty Research Colloquium Public Lecture Series.

Dr. Fathia Elmenghawi is an Assistant Professor of the Architecture Department at AURAK.  She worked in the National Consulting Bureau (NCB) and was a member of the Technical Consulting Committee of the Urban Planning Agency, Tripoli. After receiving her MPhil from the University of Liverpool, UK, she worked as a lecturer at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, UT. She obtained her PhD. in Urban Systems from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in New Jersey, USA. She has worked as a Scholar and Research Assistant in United Parks in New Jersey, USA, as an assistant professor in Urban Placemaking and Management Master’s program at the Pratt Institute in New York, USA, and as an adjunct professor at Guttman College (CUNY) of New York, USA. She obtained her bachelor degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from University of Tripoli in Libya.

“Transformation in Urban Design of Tripoli’s Center, Libya: Colonial and Post-Colonial Monuments in a Central Public Square” illustrates the changes in the urban design in Tripoli’s Center and explains the role the artifacts displayed in Piazza Castello played in expressing the the relationship between the Italian colonizers and the colonized Lybians of Tripoli. Her paper is part of a panel called “Power and Place: Studies on Monument Building in the Middle East and North Africa, 1950-1850” set to take place in San Antonio, Texas of the United States in a few weeks.  Dr. Fathia was pleased with the lecture since she gained valuable feedback that will help her in preparing for the conference.
