AURAK is Heart Healthy

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) Department of Student Life collaborated with Hospital Ibrahim Bin Hamad Obaidullah and Obaidullah Geriatric Hospital, hosting the workshop “Heart Safety” to coincide with the International Day of Heart.

In response to this continuing tragedy, World Heart Day has been organized as an international initiative, promoting awareness of cardiovascular disease in hopes of reducing the number of heart related fatalities worldwide. AURAK participated in the initiative to spearhead efforts in the UAE by organizing the “Heart Safety” workshop, raising awareness among students, faculty, and staff.  Dr. Yousef Al Tair, Hospital Director of Hospital Ibrahim Bin Hamdan Obaidullah, began “Heart Safety” with an explanation of early detection signs. He then discussed techniques to avoid cardiac arrest while playing sports, and showed multiple heart related videos. The presentation also instructed viewers of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in the case of emergencies. AURAK student volunteers continued the campaign by raising awareness at Manar Mall the following Thursday, extending the awareness of the issue to the community at large.

AURAK President, Prof. Hassan Hamdan Al Alkim, was gratified in knowing that AURAK contributed to an international enterprise in raising awareness of a major health concern that threatens the lives of millions, “If one student walks away from the presentation with the knowledge to detect the early warning signs of a heart attack, and it saves one person, it will make the entire venture worthwhile.”
