The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) School of Graduate Studies and Research featured the research of Dr. Hussain Attia, entitled “Confined Ban Variable Switching Frequency Pulse Width Modulation (CB-VSF PWM0 Method for Single-Phase Inverter” in its Faculty Research Colloquium Public Lecture Series.

Dr. Hussain Attia earned his doctorate from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Electronic Engineering in 1991 and his Masters of Science in Electronic Engineering in 1999, both from the University of Technology, Baghdad-Iraq. Since 2000 he has worked on many research projects in power electronics and renewable energy generation and conversions. During the last five years, besides serving as a reviewer for the Journal of IET Power Electronics, Dr. Hussain has published more than 50 research papers, most of them in the field of Power Electronics. He has served as a technical and organizing member for many IEEE and international conferences such as ICEDSA’16, ICECTA’17, and ICEWES’18. His research interests include harmonic reduction techniques, PWM techniques, AC/DC drives, and digital design.

Dr. Hussain’s research in “Confined Ban Variable Switching Frequency Pulse with Modulation (CB-VSF PWM) Method for Single-Phase Inverter” illustrates that variable switching frequency PWM (VSF PWM) has been proposed in the past to optimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) performance, switching inverter losses. Nevertheless, such VSF PWMs give rise to switching harmonics, which vary across a wide frequency spectrum, where the lower frequencies could resonate with the filter while the upper frequency could exceed the maximum switching frequency. This complicates VSF PWM design, restricting practical uses. In this study, a confined band variable switching frequency PWM (CB-VSF PWM) for single-phase inverter is presented. By confining the switching frequencies with a practical band, the design of the filter becomes easier while maintaining low current THD with low switching losses. The choices of the upper and lower bands of the proposed VSF are defined and the design criterion is introduced. The proposed method allows reduction in switching losses, reduction in current THD as well as facilitating the design of high order filter.

Dr. Hussain Attia has plans to present a new conference paper titled, “Supplying a Direct Current Electricity to the Isolated Dwellings through MPP Tracked PV System Based on Artificial Neural Network.”
